Slovenia – everyone here can swim!

Slovenia – everyone here can swim!

Did you know that in Slovenia every child finishing school must know how to swim? And as we all know, habits formed early last a lifetime… We’re in Slovenia with our gear, supporting the locals’ passion for swimming! Now we invite you to discover the swimming culture of this country together with our distributor, AZIMUT Shop.

Slovenia and attractions for swimmers?

Swimming in Slovenia – what do local residents (young and old) choose, and which attractions are most popular with tourists?

Swimming is popular in Slovenia across all age groups. Children learn to swim from an early age — through sports programs as well as mandatory school lessons. A 20-hour swimming course is required for children aged 6–9, and swimming skills are necessary to complete primary school.

The younger generation prefers modern water parks (Vodno Mesto Atlantis, Terme Čatež), open-water swimming outdoors in Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, and swimming in the Kolpa River.

The older generation tends to choose thermal spas (Terme Olimia, Terme Dobrna, Rogaška Slatina), peaceful lakes, and pools in wellness centers.

Slovenia is built on swimming!

Do you support various water activities, and why?

Mikstri runs a store in Vodno Mesto Atlantis, offering swimming courses, diving lessons, and “mermaid swimming” workshops. Our goal is to make water sports more accessible, especially diving, which is still sometimes seen as a sport for the few — even though in reality, anyone can take it up.

Education in Water Safety

You are involved in water rescue. Do you treat it as your job or as a mission?

Water rescue is a key part of Mikstri Rescue. Samo and Matija are Whitewater Rescue instructors who train rafting, kayaking, and canyoning guides. Certification is mandatory for commercial river guides in Slovenia. Samo is also a co-founder of the Institute for Drowning Prevention, which focuses on water-safety education and rescue training.

How do you educate people in Slovenia about water safety?

Slovenia is a country rich in water resources, and with the growth of tourism, awareness of the dangers associated with floods and fast-flowing rivers is becoming increasingly important.

Both state institutions and private organizations run educational campaigns for the public. Children in schools located near strong-current rivers learn about their hidden dangers through dedicated workshops.

“From the Pool to Open Water” — also in Slovenia

What inspires you to develop equipment for athletes and water enthusiasts? What trends do you notice on the Slovenian market?

We follow the latest trends and aim to introduce as many specialized, high-quality water sports products to the Slovenian market as possible. In addition to regular swimming courses for children, there is a growing interest in organized swimming groups for adults who want to improve their technique and fully enjoy the sport.

Which swimming events would you recommend to tourists visiting Slovenia?

Most public swimming events are triathlons, with the largest one being Ironman Slovenia.

Other important events include: Triathlon Bled, Triatlon Jeklenih Bohinj, Triathlon Ljubljana, Triatlon Kočevje, and the Istrian Cup Triathlon (Koper).

Many similar events are organized across the country, attracting both amateurs and professionals.
